In this variation, a crossover event has occurred between the two innermost chromatids of the zygotic tetrad. See the diagram at the right. The first meiotic division produces two heterozygous products in which the dominant black phenotype will be displayed. However, the second meiotic division produces an alternate pattern of black and gray spore coats which after the mitotic division results in a paired black, paired gray sequence in the ascus sac. Note that during the meiotic divisions, the actual phenotypes described above cannot be seen. However the situation is treated as if they can be seen in order to assist in the clear trace of genotypes through the different meiotic and mitotic divisions.
